Here at Stuart’s Topsoil we love a good soil story, especially when it shows how the ground beneath our feet is quietly helping the planet.
A long term study in Germany found that forest soils are surprisingly good at pulling methane out of the air.
Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, so that is big news.
Researchers tracked soil air for years using tubes and sealed chambers and discovered that forests absorbed about three percent more methane each year.
Warmer temperatures and slightly drier conditions helped methane move through soil more easily, where busy microorganisms broke it down.
Not every region behaves the same, but the takeaway is clear. Healthy soil does more than grow trees and plants; It plays a real role in protecting our climate.
